Styling your LSD is the Easiest OOTS! Slip on- Slip off!

The Little Summer Dress is for real the easiest Outfit Of The Summer!  It also gets A+ for its 3 ‘F’s :  Fresh, Free, Fun!

So- start wearing your cute dresses!  There’s nothing easier than a simple LSD.  When you get your hands on one- don’t let go! You’ll be wearing it summer after summer trust me!  If you’re more of a pants girl and think dresses don’t suit you…think again!

Summer heat cries out for flair and a non-conforming fit when it comes to dresses- so how can it not suit you?  LSD’s were born to camouflage and set you free! And the plus side?  You have to do nothing else than wear it- no layering- no matching, no coordinating, no additions necessary.

This little green striped number needs absolutely no help!  I mean, you can obviously change it up with accessories and different sandals and there you go- different looks! That’s why you just can never get rid such gems- ever!

The only thing you need to think of in terms of styling is whether you want to dress it up for day or evening.  You do know that you can dress these little darlings up for both, right? Coz you can!  Go from laundry room, out to lunch with the girls, to the grocery store and back for supper preps and a nightcap on the porch or off for a nightly walk- without ever having to change!

Slip on and slip out!

Let’s look at a few others that don’t disappoint.  I’ve worn these for a few summers already and will keep on doing so😊

Also…the LSD seems to always be part of the most fun and memorable times- this was taken in Greece last year!

#Confessionoftheday: Come to think of it…Yes- I am completely addicted to the LSD! Super freeing, fresh and fun!

A Fashionable Diva’s Styling Must- Haves

Spring Summer Series

Ok- this could mean tons of stuff.  But let’s narrow it down to the nitty gritty and see what it is you can re-style over and over:  Staples.

So, whether you’re the type of girl who needs tons of stuff, or you’re a minimalist, here’s my Stylist point of view on some must-haves:

At least one day bag and one evening bag.  Here everyone thinks black (so that it goes with everything)-  I’ll let you in on something; come closer: Black can age you and can actually ruin the whole look! Yeah you read that right.  A better choice would be something colorful enough to wear during the day (so it matches with pretty much everything!) Or even a paillettes- colourful gem.

These go with absolutely everything…even if at first you wouldn’t think so!

And for the evening, why not a delicious metallic gold or silver?  Perfect!

For sure and evening dazzler…but why not for daytime as well?!

Get yourself a great jumpsuit.  This little gem can be dressed down with sneaker and a jean jacket , or dressed up with bling and sling back sandals.  You need this- and- somehow it’s always on trend.

Far left has bling on the shoulders; Middle can be dressed up or down; Far right is a palazzo darling!

A suit jacket /blazer (men’s even better!).  Wear it belted (with nothing under- like a shirt) ; open over jeans; dressed up with a gorgeous scarf and pants or skirt; over a dress.  Ok I’ll stop- too many possibilities!

How fun is this?!
And you remember these two…

Shoes?  This is where I go a bit overboard- but actually, it’s necessary!  You should own about 5 pairs per season.  Example Summer:

Colorful flat sandals that go with bermudas or short dresses;

Make it fun- add some bling on daytime cuties too!

 High-heel sandals for dressier times.

 Great sneakers.

Add some pizzazz to your sneakers by getting platforms- and even better in metallic colors!

Low or high-heeled mules for in-between go to’s (they look good with anything).

Mules…I could literally live in them all year round if I could!

And lastly, no need for pics here: flip-flops as dressy or casual as you need! Your choice!

  Dresses

You need at least one long dress – sleeveless is preferable so you can wear it dressed up or down by layering it.

You can add one cocktail dress- but these days a great pair of pants with dressy top can also do the trick – so I leave this to your discretion.

Who says a great pants- outfit can’t outshine a cocktail dress?! Do you see a metallic pattern happening here? Yes…that’s key to everything , darlings!

You should also have at least one fun shorter day dress that you can take from day to evening.

Lace! Fresh in the day and exquisite for the evening. Accessorize and bring it to another level; like this Chanel collier I paired with it!

Lastly, a versatile kimono wanna-be for cooler evenings; as a cover up; worn as a blouse- it’s a passe-partout! (good for any occasion!) See my article on that here.

Cover-ups…but make it more!

Since we’re headed for summer:  Sunscreen, sunnies, and a pretty hat.

Lastly: The most important must have though…is Attitude. A feel-good in what I’m wearing attitude. Confidence is everything! If you feel good, you’ll look good. Flaunt your attitude. Stylist’s Orders.

You’re done…until next season!

#Confessionoftheday:  My number one go-to- and the one I most highly recommend my Lovelies really is ATTITUDE.

Is Covid Responsible for my Ever-Growing DIY Compulsion?

I believe so.  As if I weren’t already obsessed enough with transformations, here I go with even more of an excuse: Time.

Time- that luxury we crave.  The obsession of never having enough of it.  Well, now that we are forced to making some…we start packing it all in.  I’ve mentioned before how we gotta be careful with this feeling of always needing to be busy- READ that Article here.

This time however, I won’t be blaming myself for induging in compulsive behaviour, I’m just gonna blame it all on Covid.  Or rather…my personal cure to stop-obsessing about Covid!  How do I do that?  I re-style, re-purpose, re-love, re-wear, re-fashion my clothes!

I’m getting a clearer vision of what it is I want to wear; what I need to wear; what I feel happy wearing- and then: Out come the scissors!

This time I’ve changed up an animal print, turtle-neck dress…into a Cardi!  But there’s more!  I’ve incorporated a scarf (just in case I want that option), and a turban (or headband) as well!

This dress is cute…but a bit limiting (I’m too warm in it- it suffocates me!) So, layering is the last thing I want to do with this one…So: A-Chopping-it-will-go!
What a difference! And so many possibilities…
Can you see that the scarf is an integral part of it…
I linked the scarf through the two openings I slit…
Oh…and also made use of this turban…

Wanna see how I worked this DIY and styled the whole look? You can watch the process here:

What have you been DIYing?

#Confessionoftheday: My compulsion is real. But it’s healthy, right?

The Friday Fashionphile #2 Spring 2020 Trends to Look For

If you’re a vintage lover…this is your season!

The runways have been swarming with reminiscent iconic looks some of us have worn and adored.  I’m talking: Vests, crochet, polka dots, psychedelic prints, disco collars (all kinds of collars to be exact!), short suits… What more can a vintage lover ask for?

And as for colours; I’ll just talk about my faves: neons and red of course!

Fashion always repeats itself- or as we say- everything comes back in fashion!  But when the come-back is this good, you wanna wear all that goodness that inspires.  Here are some of the looks that this Montreal styling diva is breathless about:

CROCHET!

I love this so much-It brings back the 60’s and 70’s vibe! https://busbeestyle.com/spring-fashion-trends-2020/

VESTS

Vests are so versatile and perfect for layering. Sets the mood for chic or casual- or edgy! https://busbeestyle.com/spring-fashion-trends-2020/

POLKA DOTS

Are we surprised that this trend keeps popping back? Look how good this looks! See: http://www.stylelistaconfessions.com/2019/09/stylish-fashion-week-spring-2020-trends.html

PSYCHEDELIC PRINTS

These are all the rage. Personally, I can’t get enough of this- totally my vibe! Remember this ladies?? See: https://www.ellecanada.com/fashion/trends/your-guide-to-the-top-trends-for-spring-summer-2020

DISCO COLLARS

Ok I’m dying- This was probably the funnest time for fashion- am I right? see: https://ciinmagazine.com/fashion/ciin06022001-the-disco-collar/

MORE COLLARS!

Check out these Peter Pan collars! Ok, how adorable are these? See: http://www.stylelistaconfessions.com/2019/09/stylish-fashion-week-spring-2020-trends.html

SHORT SUITS

Who doesn’t love a fabulous suit- and especially with the freedom of shorts! These are seen with Bermudas especially- but all lengths are in as well; even the short shorts! See: https://40plusstyle.com/spring-2020-fashion-trends/

COLOURS?

I’ll just focus on two of my very favourite: Neon… How perfect is this lime green?? See: https://www.styleoholic.com/neon-outfits-for-spring-2020/

And Red! Yes, Red! I am crazy about this colour for both fall and winter, but adding it for Spring and Summer…well, I am in heaven! See: https://glowsly.com/spring-summer-color-trends/

These are some of the trends that I’m most excited about for Spring 2020. And although we know that trends come and go, that doesn’t mean they actually disappear within a season. Many of these trends, in fact, last well into one season to the next (just look at neons and polka dots). So we are good for awhile.

As well, I’d say that we can probably dig into our own closets and find that once again, we can find these same trends already hanging there waiting for us to style them up again.

#Confessionoftheday: I’m ready to ravage my closet, determined to find some of these looks right in there!

Is Confinement Wear the New Lounge Wear?

We are all at home now (or at least we should be!).  And as petty of a question as this may be, this stylist wants to know…What are we all wearing?

The first few days at home, I get it- we wanted to be comfortable and so, for many of us it was an-all day pajama day…but now that more than a week’s gone by- enough!

I wrote an article not too long ago about the benefits of dressing for our mood: Dopamine dressing (you can read it here).  There is so much truth about how clothing can change your whole mood, demeanor and attitude.

Can we all agree that we need to pep ourselves up a bit and try to stay positive during these difficult times?  So, let’s start by, at the very least, getting dressed when at home!

And, if you insist on comfort, this may be the time to take out those gorgeous kimonos you’ve been wanting to wear (and what exactly were you saving them for anyway??).

Besides kimonos though, ladies, please wear your clothes!  Just because we are staying home does not mean we have to let go of it all- you don’t want to drag yourself into a depression (and yes- therapists will tell patients exactly that:  get up, shower and get dressed- every day!).  It’s important!  It makes you feel like you are ready for your day.

You are not getting dressed to impress- you’re doing it for yourself!  Go ahead and dress up; whether it’s in casual wear, evening wear- or whatever wear- just do it:  Get up and get dressed!

There is absolutely no specific reason for this type of dressing- cause we’re not going anywhere! This, my friends can make it all the more fun!  Wear what you want- now is the time to enjoy even the craziest of outfits.  After all, nobody’s visiting!  Get up, get dressed and put on your Confinement wear!

Here are some ideas for what some Montreal divas are wearing to dress up while in confinement (and even when not!). One thing that all these looks have in common (besides being so darn cute!), is: Comfort.

Jumpsuits are so versatile- they’re always a good idea! (And always easier to wiggle out of when you’re home rather than out!).
I love me a good loose turtleneck- perfect if dressed up with flocked-motif leggings in the same tones.
If you’re now working from home-but still need to make a presence online , this casual work look is perfect. (I wore this to teach my online class).
Pleather at home? Why not! Also- add a loose chain belt for a little pizzazz. (Hey, it’s your house- wear what you like!)
Have fun in your closet – try a look- take a selfie! Crew necks are my faves; like these worn with leggings or jeans.
Can you tell I have this thing for motif leggings? And for a match made in heaven- I love to add me a sparkly top.
Flair baggy pants with another loose knit look. Comfy but so pretty! (BTW, the cream collar was crocheted by yours truly- just to add that extra touch).

Let’s stay safe for the health of all during this difficult time, while we connect with all things that are truly meaningful to us. And, as we try to distract ourselves from the worry and anxiety- why not indulge in a little dress-up time? There’s no harm in bringing some dopamine back into our lives…Let’s keep this quarantine fashionable shall we?

Don’t lose hope! Dress up and get yourself some good pet therapy- works all the time!

#Confessionoftheday: secretly dreaming of a virtual runway where we all dress for our own runway…Hey- confinement will do that to you!

The Friday Fashionphile: #1. DESIGNERS WHO IMPRESS

Creative artists that baffle us with fantastical fashion are the ones that capture our attention and set the trends.  But what if a fashion designer could do more than that?  What if they could alter the way they create for the better…for sustainability?  What if they could do this without limiting their creativity?  These would be the true geniuses prancing one step ahead of the game.

I’m always on the lookout for such geniuses and am pleased to find that there is truly a movement happening!  And who’s at the helm of it all?  Don’t look any further than Stella McCartney.

From her fabrics, right down to her manufacturing, offices and retail outlets- all is in regard for the environment and its protection.  Her products are sustainable in every way.  Her motto is to make clothing that last- quality is key.  She is a pioneer in her field and there are others are quickly following suit.

As we become more educated and sensitized, we realize how much it makes all sense.  But bear in mind that ultimately, design, comfort, color, originality and trend, flash first in our mind and that’s mainly what sells if you don’t know any better.  Bottom line: We must fall in love!  So, it’s imperative that sustainability matches a desire for the garment!

Check out these following designers who have adapted sustainability in their practice- you’ll agree that they don’t disappoint!  When you can marry good sense with extraordinary beauty and creativity- well that’s a match that can’t be beaten. These are the fashion designers that must be applauded…as well as lauded.

Read about Stella McCartney’s sustainability here.

Read about Vivienne Westwood’s sustainability here.

Read about Rag and Bone’s sustainability here.

Which sustainable Fashion Designers impress you?

Shop Your Closet- Or -These Thrill-of-The- Hunt Places!

Turns out that the perfect jacket I was shopping for, was actually the one I was wearing!

I’ve been rooting for the ‘shop your closet’ concept for a while now over on my Instagram account- and for good reason; it’s an-all-around good thing!

And with all that’s happening in the world today…I feel it’s time we take a closer look at how we live our lives, and put things in perspective…even, (if not more) when it comes to fashion.

Shopping your closet will inspire you to not only feed your creativity, but also entice you to become more caring for our environment.  And need I mention how soothing this will be for your pocket?

There is a strong movement towards sustainability, and this includes up and coming, as well as, well established Fashion Designers.  Slowly everyone is getting on board- and shopping your closet is a way to start!  So my very first suggestion would be to check what you have and get creative.  First on my list would be to alter your clothes of course! See my article on that here:  Fashionable DIY Styling- A Must!

Yet, there are always some additional pieces that we may have to add to our wardrobe, and purchasing is necessary…However, it can still be done conscientiously.  Second-hand rentals or consignment shops are constantly sprouting such as The Real Real for example.  Still on the higher end, we also have LXR, which is a concession now available online in the larger department stores.   Then there are your swap meets, where ladies meet and swap clothing.  There are your local non-profit charities that have set up shop to raise funds for a certain cause; for example here in Montreal we have the Nova shops

And of course, there is always the Salvation Army and Village des Valeurs, to name a few.

I personally love Vintage clothes and those can be found in numerous treasure shops on St. Denis Street and Boul. St. Laurent- One such gem is Boutique 1861. Another that comes to mind if you are on the West Island is La Friperie du village (he has gorgeous designer bags!!!).  Montreal, like New York, is filled with these gems- all you need is the thrill of the hunt- and you’ll find what you want! Check out:  The Ultimate Guide to Vintage Shopping in Montreal.

Bottom line:  Create designer looks that you want, but that also fit your budget.

Here’s another idea: Why not set up a closet dress-up day with some friends? You can arrange to have a swap-time. Or, why not have a good friend come over for some ideas? She could show you how she would style up some of your clothes. Sometimes we might need a fresh pair of eyes to open up or view!

Lastly, here’s how this Montreal Diva re-vamps her looks…just by shopping my closet!

Gucci vibes- just right for a special birthday supper.
Prairie dress anyone?
Or maybe a chic velvet moment…just look at those sleeves!
And for when work prescribes black- I’ve had this chain little sweater for years and still loving it.
And here comes another black look…
Probably one of my favourite looks for this winter- especially the arm warmers- love!
Cozy sweaters for a dressed-down Saturday look
Burgundy love for this Saturday one
Speaking of burgundy…My love of jumpsuits had me shopping my daughter’s closet that time!!
Am I the only one crazy for bell-bottoms? Another Saturday look.
Overloaded teacher look
Tough teacher look – ya right.
This one: Just because mixing prints is my passion. How can I not love this?!
There’s just something about a good coat. Statement piece.
Speaking of Statement pieces: This one is the piece de resistance…My mom’s 1950’s coat
And another pic- just because I can’t resist this delicious coat!

These fabulous, and easy styles are all from my closet. Take the time to play dress-up from your wardrobes, Ladies…You never know what you’re gonna find!

#Confessionoftheday: you’re never too old to walk your own runway!

10 Reasons Why Montreal Women Look So Stylish

Don’t want to brag here…but there is some truth to what you’ve probably already heard…Montreal ladies have great style.  I honestly don’t think it’s an overworked or overdone thing on our part.  What is certain though is that we want to look fabulous…all the time.

People always comment on how they Love Montreal fashion. I hear it all the time; whether it’s while at work (tourists from the rest of Canada or the US- and Europe…).  And, when I’m the one traveling in the rest of Canada- I feel the stares!  Is it that we are over-dressed?  Or do we really look that different (style-wise)?  Even on a regular dressed-down day, people visiting me have commented and asked:  How is it that women here always look so put together? Uhmm…what?!  Well, ok, we’ll take it…but hey, we know when we’re not looking our best (who knew that wasn’t so bad at all to some on the outside loll!).

When I used to work as Fashion Stylist for the largest department store here in Montreal, it was mandatory that I assist all the Product Knowledge sessions with reps from the different clothing lines.  It struck me that they would ALL say that the orders shipped out to Montreal were different form the rest of Canada!  How so?

Montreal orders were made up of more outlandish colours, patterns and styles.  Nothing was standard.  We were not so big on neutrals- unless they were staple high quality items (or black!); otherwise for the trendier, evening, cocktail and even work attire:  unique colours, patterns and styles came here first and always did better in sales.  Montreal women wanted originality in their wardrobes.  They wanted to stand out fashionably.  And- this was also true for cosmetics, skincare, nails, hair and accessories.

One day I just might do an in-depth study on this.  But right now, purely for your interest, I’ll just go with my personal and professional Styling experience to give you an ‘in’ on what, I guess you could say, sets us apart.  Here goes!

  • Fashion Does Not equal Style- We have a very discerning eye for detail. Two women can buy the exact same top or dress and wear it in completely different ways (just because we’re thinking that the last thing we want is to bump into someone who’s wearing the same clothes), so we need to change it up (think accessories, make-up or hairdo).  The way we style it will make all the difference.  So we don’t care as much for the fashion as we do for the style and in the details.
  • We don’t buy something just because it’s designer or prestigious. We buy because it looks amazing on us (whether it’s an evening gown or basic underwear!).  We are not defined by labels.  In fact, we avoid them as much as possible unless it’s  a plus factor (ethical, local…) to something that already looks terrific.
  • We Don’t shop for our age. We shop for the look that best represents how we feel and that we want to portray.  We emphasize our assets without hiding what we like least.  So, what ends up happening is that, that which we like least, becomes completely unnoticeable.
  • The outlet we shop from is of no importance to us. The piece of clothing that we fall in love with (coz that’s what usually happens with us- more on that in the next point) So-It can be found in designer boutique, retail chain, second-hand shops, vintage, thrift, passed-me down, while traveling, or sometimes, online.  Brand loyalty is not necessarily a thing with us- unless you nail it for us every time.  We are a challenge for designers and businesses alike.  Heads up:  Give us a reason to stay.
  • When we purchase- it’s because we are completely in love with it- Price is the least of the determining factors. Meaning:  if we leave the place without it, we know we will regret it.  We will obsess about it.  We will go back and get it. (And when price really is the road block, we will hunt for something similar to pull off the look in mind!).
  • Montreal women actually wear what they shop. Whether this is an outrageous colour or out of the ordinary pattern- if we bought it, means we loved it- so we’re wearing it.  We keep our stuff – think quality- think sustainable here.
  • There’s no such thing as spending too much on hair, skincare, cosmetics, NAILS. Montreal women know that if those aren’t put together, you can wear Chanel and look like hell.  Hair is our Number One accessory.
  • Montreal women don’t wait on each other to start a trend. First one to wear it gets the applause.  You wanna be that girl.  And from there, we edge our sisters on to go ahead and take the look a step further in their own way! It’s all about originality and that Ahh! effect.
  • You can never be too overdressed or be wearing too much makeup- or your hair overdone. Why?  Well because even if it takes you tons of products to achieve one look, it’s got to turn out looking effortless and on-point.  So that could never look overdone (even if your daily look is a dramatic smokey eye with statement black eyeliner).  Enjoy!
  • We mean what we wear. Purpose is key.  Styling is intentional.  The intention for how we’ll wear the item was set the day we got it, even if things might change along the way.  We wear the clothes- they don’t wear us.  We own our style and feel comfortable in whatever setting we choose to wear it.  I think this last point is key: We just do our own thing!  I think you’ll recognize that in our stride😉

So that was the scoop, ladies!  So what do you think?  Is this stylish Montreal women really a thing? Do you recognize these traits in Montreal Women?  How do you approach style?  And- if you are a Montreal Woman, how accurate is this for you?

You just know- I gotta know loll!

Here’s a short clip of my look the other evening for a friendly going-away party at a restaurant. If you like the look- you can also follow me on the liketoknow.it app. http://www.liketoknow.it/lucybertoldi

#Confessionoftheday: Montreal women love fashion- in fact we Adore following the trends via runways, magazines- you name it.  We’re just Big on adapting and somewhat reinventing it!

Fashionable DIY Styling- A Must!

Shopping scenario…

Me:  “Wow…do you know in how many ways I could transform this outfit?”

My husband: “Why do you always have to do that? Can’t you just buy the thing and just wear it as is?

Me: “Why would I do that?  It would just look like everybody else’s who’s buying this same outfit.  No.”

Husband: “OK but if you don’t like it the way it is now- why buy it in the first place?

Me:  “Well I love the fabric, the color, the fit and all the possibilities! I just don’t like the length, the collar, the sleeves…oh and maybe I’d change the buttons too.

Husband rolls his eyes:  “Here we go again…

This is typical for me when it comes to shopping or styling!  And even if I don’t transform it- I end up wearing the garment in the least imaginable way it was meant to be worn!

IMG_7258

You might be wondering why don’t I just go out there and buy some fabric and create from scratch?  Well…I really love transforming garments- DIY’s are my thing.  Now, there’s a more important aspect to all this madness.  I strongly believe that we can all do our part in Sustainability- and if that means conserving, refashioning, re-purposing, recreating, thrifting, swapping and DIY- I’m there!

And this is a definite trend my Darlings!  I was especially thrilled with the recent Margiella show for Fall 2020- whose Designer, John Galliano created a new line: Recicla.

He is upcycling and restoring and basically DIYing older collections and also creating from recycled materials, Vintage and second hand!  He, and I quote, called it “Restorative”  See article and slideshow Here.  Fast fashion is getting the boot.

I get it and I’m so on board.  Creating is everything, and for me art and fashion are one.  So I see styling as the natural consequence of both art and fashion.   ‘Styling it My Way’, here I come!  Don’t be afraid to try it.  You’ll get such a sense of satisfaction knowing that you’ve created something tailor-made and that’s also good for the planet.

Don’t know how to sew?  No problem- most stuff you can get away with just cropping- or even better; just glue it!  I honestly think that Fabri- Tac glue is the invention of the century lol!  Use it for hems, pleats, putting together seams and so much more.

You’re no expert?  We all think that.  The trick is to just start slowly and watch lots of YouTube videos to get ideas and inspiration.  And, you can always contact me as well- I’ll gladly support you and show you what I can.  This re-fashioning thing is really earning momentum.  In fact, I can say that I’ve converted a good percentage of my clients into letting me re-style, re-fashion or re-purpose their wardrobe.  It feels great- looks new and costs so much less than anything they purchase new.  I’d probably have them transform it anyway!  Oh- and do I mention once again how good it is for the planet to conserve rather than dispose?

In another post I’ll share how thrifting is the other part of this DIY equation.  But for now, let me just show you a few of my own fashion DIY’s.

The time I changed the buttons and added leatherette sleeves to my jacket (plus a belt!):

This too short, too tight dress

 turned into these two tops:

I added ruffles to these pants which were not long enough:

These sleeves were too tight and so uncomfortable- so I added a strip of leftover black knit fabric:

I removed this skirt’s lining and transformed it into 3 different wearable outfits:

I slit the hems of these pants and added a ruffled fabric right off the collar of a jacket I’m gonna re-purpose later;)

And the Kimono I created!  Without sewing- not one stitch!
